A groundbreaking blueprint for building organizations grounded in dignity, distributed leadership, and the conscious use of power — drawn from Indigenous wisdom, the natural world, and decades of frontline practice.

The Future Isn't a hierarchy it's a circle graphic

Most organizations are still built on a model designed to control people. The Matriarch Effect offers another way — one rooted in the oldest organizing principle humanity has known. It is a practical, hopeful guide to designing workplaces where every person, and the whole, can thrive.

We inherited our organizations from a single idea: that power means control, that someone must be above and others below, that people are resources to be managed. We’ve lived inside that idea so long we mistake it for reality. But it was always a design choice — and design choices can be remade.

In The Matriarch Effect, organization systems designer and peace-builder Robyn Short recovers a far older logic. Matriarchy, she shows, was never “rule by women.” The word means the "mothers from the beginning" — a way of organizing life around care, belonging, and the fierce protection of what matters most. It is not patriarchy with different people in charge. It is an entirely different way of being together, one that human communities, and the natural world, have practiced for millennia.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Grounded in Short’s doctoral research and drawing on Indigenous traditions including the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, animal behavior, and the leading edge of organizational science, the book moves from understanding to practice to design. It introduces the five intelligences that matriarchal leaders are built on, then shows how distributed leadership, genuine collaboration, psychological safety, conflict handled as information, and elder wisdom become the working architecture of a thriving organization. It closes with a clear, step-by-step roadmap for leaders ready to redesign power in their own organizations.

It is a book about what we build next — workplaces where people can bring their real selves, where success is measured in wellbeing and sustainability alongside performance, and where leadership is something held in common rather than hoarded at the top.

The circle was always here. The Matriarch Effect is an invitation to step back into it — and to build, steadily and with love, for the seventh generation.

INSIDE THE BOOK

Mothers from the beginning: a new logic of  power for modern organizations.

The Matriarch Effect unfolds in three movements.

What matriarchy actually is (and the myths that obscure it), and an honest look at the model most organizations still run on — what Short calls the Patriarch Effect, and the staggering cost of disengagement it produces.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

From Robyn

I spent decades working with leaders who wanted to build life-affirming organizations but felt trapped inside the structures they’d inherited. I’ve sat with people hollowed out by top-down systems that silence them and erode their trust. This book is my answer to that — and to my own years of learning to breathe again inside a world of work that too often makes it hard to. It is written for everyone who suspects there is a better way to lead and is ready to help build it.

Robyn Short is an organizational systems design consultant, mediator, peace-builder, and the founder of the Workplace Peace Institute. She works with leaders across industries to build organizations grounded in dignity, belonging, and the conscious use of power. Her practice sits at the intersection of conflict resolution, trauma-informed leadership, and organizational systems design. She holds a Doctor of Liberal Studies in peace studies and systems design from Southern Methodist University. The Matriarch Effect is her fifth book. She lives in Colorado, on the ancestral lands of the Ute people, where she hikes with her husband and their dogs.
